Beyond the Curve: Kenya’s Miraculous Scoliosis, Chiari and Syrinx Journey

Kenya’s story is one of unwavering faith, unexpected challenges, and a journey that redefined what’s possible in scoliosis care.

On May 22, 2024, after thinking her curve was due to posture, we X-rayed Kenya’s spine. To my shock, the results showed a 55-degree curve one way and a 45-degree curve the other. She was suddenly in the surgical category.

We desperately wanted to avoid a major spinal fusion, so I began searching for every possible option. That search, full of what I can only describe as miracles, led us to the National Scoliosis Center (NSC) in Fairfax, Virginia.

From my first conversation with their team, I felt hope. I shared Kenya’s X-rays, photos, and exam results, and even though her case was severe, they encouraged us to bring her to Virginia as soon as possible. We packed the car and made the drive that same day.

Orthotists and their patient
Kenya’s first visit to National Scoliosis Center

At NSC, the orthotists worked together to evaluate Kenya. They confirmed the seriousness of her curves but felt they could help. With decades of experience, the orthotists built Kenya’s custom brace. They collaborated, consulted with other experts from around the world, and poured themselves into her care as if her future depended on it. And in many ways, it did. I’ll never forget their determination and the compassion they showed our family.

During that visit, the orthotists pointed out that something unusual was happening in her neck — something that needed further medical evaluation. Because of their insight, we pursued testing that later revealed Kenya had a severe Chiari Malformation and syrinx, conditions that required neurosurgery and most likely the causes of her scoliosis.

Within weeks, Kenya underwent brain and spinal surgery to correct the Chiari and syrinx, which was successful. After recovery, she returned to Virginia for another brace fitting. Her progress since then has been nothing short of incredible. Kenya’s curves have dropped dramatically, moving from the surgical category to ranges considered conservative. Today, due to the Chiari surgery, bracing and Kenya’s compliance and resilience, spinal fusion surgery is no longer recommended.

We know the journey isn’t over and it’s not been an easy one, but what once felt impossible has become a testimony of faith, resilience, and teamwork. God placed the right people in our path at exactly the right time.

We are profoundly grateful for the entire National Scoliosis Center team. Their expertise, commitment, and heart gave Kenya a chance at the life we prayed for.

With the humblest of gratitude,
